Keeping it Real: Stockpiling

Julie from Gingerscraps has a novel idea. We all love to see the beautiful crafts, home makeovers, decorating ideas and other artsy projects, inspiring our next idea. Those photos seem to be straight out of a magazine. However, we never see the messy side. The messy side of being a housewife or mother. In Julie's post she talks about her struggle with never ending laundry. I actually LOVE to do laundry. It's the only chore in the house where my OCD completely takes over in sorting and organizing piles of clothing. The hubs volunteers to do the dishwasher most of the time (I can't stand touching dirty dishes, ewww), as well as vacuuming (that's his favorite chore) and taking out the garbage. Our biggest problem? We're running out of space. I am not the one to pack rat at all. I once moved from a 2 bedroom house in Spokane to an apartment in Seattle without anything more than a suitcase full of clothes (granted I was moving in with my husband to be and didn't need much but I had no attachments to the material things I owned). The rest was donated, given away, or trashed. I like living with less. It's not uncommon for me to do a total clean out and just rid the clutter that seems to make it's way into our home. We're already living in tight quarters and since we started ~~extreme couponing~~ stockpiling in preparation for the new baby, I can't figure out where the heck to put it all. This is a photo of my counter from the last few days. I am still struggling to find a spot for a portion of our latest grocery haul. Thankfully I was able to get the cold items in the fridge and freezer and some items into the cupboards, but oh my, I'm in a pickle for the rest of it - and the several boxes of cereal aren't even in this photo!

Donation to Talk About Curing Autism

As promised, the proceeds from the sale of On the Spectrum, were donated to one of the two autism non profits chosen in April. Today, I made the $16.00 donation from the sale of the On the Spectrum kits - 8 of you purchased this kit in April (at the sale price of $2.50) and the proceeds (after store commission deductions) were donated to Talk About Curing Autism. May's proceeds will be sent to the Northwest Autism Center.

Each week, I will chose one CT Layout that I think stands out and I will recognize the CT Member that designed the layout. And I am pleased to announce that this week's CT Spotlight of the Week goes to Drica for her layout....Making VCards. I love the way she blended the photo for the background and also for the cute way she framed the photo....

LOTM for January

It is the end of the month so you know what that means. It is time for LOTM. It is always such a tough choice and I thought long and hard. This month I chose a beautiful LO by crazsquaw. She is actually on Misty's CT and always does fantastic work. I asked her a few questions so we could all get to know her a little better.

1) How long have you been digi-scrapping?
For almost 8 years.

2) Have you ever paper scrapped before?
Yes, I have been scrap booking for over 20 years. I also used to work at a craft store and I was the Dept. Head of the rubber stamp and scrapbook dept.

3) What is your favorite element to scrap with?
Greenery. You can add so much to a page with a little bit of leaves, limbs and/or flowers.

4) What are your favorite challenges to do in the forums?
Ones that make me think outside the box-but I love all of the challenges because they inspire me and give me great ideas!

Are you ready for the big reveal? Here is her awesome LO. I just loved the vintage feel and the selective coloring and the quote the whole just came together so nicely. She used Misty's Lola kit.

Serious Case of the Mondays?

The title says it all. What do you do when you are feeling allergic and just flat out icky? I personally like to look at things that are pretty, SPARKLY, and preferably something Disney. I looooooooove Misty's "Just Married" kit. It reminds me of Cinderella and Prince Charming, of my wedding day, and of happier non-monday- days. :-)

And with a price of only $2.99, what reason could you possibly have for not scurrying over RIGHT NOW and buying it? If only to just look at it. :-)

I used this kit to do a scrapbook page for my mom for what would have been her 30th anniversary. The boy and girl in it even look like my parents- and Cinderella is her favorite character ever. So here's my layout:

New Releases - January 7th!

Happy New Year!

I am participating in Project 365 again this year. Last year, I didn't even last a month so I am hoping to really stay committed in 2011. If you're interested in tracking my blog progress, you can head over to 365 O'Brien Moments for all the news.

In the meantime, I have been designing up a storm! I have 3 products releasing today, and two of them are CU OK. (All images are clickable)

The first is a set of Love Doodles. All of them were hand drawn by myself in Illustrator and they are saved as .png files. There are a total of 16 doodles and a bonus heart brush (.abr file) included.

I'm also starting a line of P365 items called My Life: {Project 365). The first item available is a set of Glitter Sunburst Papers. My creative team did a fantastic job of showing you how easy it is to incorporate them into almost any layout. They're versatile!

Where do you live?
I live in Ingolstadt, Germany.

When did you start scrapping?
I scrap since March ´08. A friend of mine started scrapping and after a while I tried it and was addicted.

What inspires you?
It´s nothing special which inspire me. Sometimes I see an element or paper of a kit and have an idea. Or I have a photo and know which kit is perfect for it. And I see many lo´s where I like the style and try to do it.

It is that time again to announce December's LOTM, and can you believe it is almost a new year as well? Time sure does fly. I was browsing through Funky Playground Designs Gallery and there were so many LO's to choose from but the one that really stuck out and I thought was just so awesome was a LO by our own CTM Adriana. 1. What is a 'must have' item you put on your pages? Ribbon or Ric Rac - I can't live without it!!
2. How often do you edit your pics you use to scrap with and do you think it's important? I edit almost all my pictures in some way, whether a simple color boost or just cropping. I'm not a great photographer and I find that editing the photos can make them appear better then they actually are.
3. Do you use templates? YES YES YES!! I love templates. I think they are great when you are trying to get something done in a hurry, or if you have trouble with clustering, templates can be a great help.
4. What other things you do besides digiscrapping? Other then digi-scrapping, I read alot. My favorite authors are Kristin Hannah, Jodi Picoult, & Nicholas Sparks. I also spend a lot of time with my family playing games or watching TV and movies!
5. How do you think you've improved since you started digiscrapping? I've improved on my journaling capabilities for sure. It used to frighten me to have to journal and now I love it, whether it is a few sentences to a few paragraphs. I still have a long way to go though!
6. What is one part of digiscrapping that you would like to improve on? I would love to improve my clustering. I love layouts that have a lot of clustering and white space but I have to work really hard to achieve that look and I still struggle with it.
7. What is the first LO you've ever made?

This is a layout I made for a Speed Scrap when I first started. Kit is Beautiful You by Digi-Designs by Nicole and Jacabean Designs.

8. What are your favorite three LOs ever made?

Throwback Thursday

Hi Everyone! Leilanie here to bring you Throwback Thursday. Today is also Thanksgiving and I wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving to all of our US readers! On to the kit, today I chose to showcase Behind the Lens.

This kit is collab with Girl Boy Girl designs. It is such a beautiful kit, I loved working with it! Here is my page, I used the kit to create the title page for my scrap journal. I also used Misty's "L" template for this page.

LO Highlights

I was browsing through some galleries and came across some gorgous LO's using Misty's kits. I thought it would be a great time to go ahead and highlight some of these LO's and of course each one will be linked so you can all go leave some love.

The first layout I have to show you was created by AmieN1 using Beautiful Dreamer which is a collab between Misty O'Brien Designs and Scrappin' Serenity. She also used Misty's Border Up Commercial Use Borders.

Next up I have a LO created by kimmyscraps using Misty's kit Lola.

Last but not least I have this fabulous LO created by scrappinbella using Misty's newest kit Scrap On.

So there you have it, and of course I could go on and on and on, there are just so many beautiful creations in all of the galleries around digi-land. Realistic Shadows!

The one thing I notice on layouts that catch my eye, is shadows! There are so many ways to do them and so many different looks that there is no right way to do them but what feels right to you. I am going to show you how I do mine. Because that is the one thing about my LO’s that is consistent, is that I do my shadows the same way every time. They might not look like it, but because I have this technique down it goes a lot faster than you would think. This tutorial is for Photoshop. I work in PS cs5 and I am not sure how this would translate to PSE or PSP.

This LO of mine using Misty's Everyday Happenings, has several shadows that are created using this technique that I am going to show you.

Having consistent shadows on a LO makes it look like a cohesive piece and makes it that much more polished. When I start I make sure the lighting is all the same direction. So the first thing I would do is to get my shadow the way that I want it on the 1^st layer and then copy and paste the layer effects to get the shadows consistent with all the layers that I need shadows on. I usually start with this:

· Bend mode: Linear Burn (I think this gives a more realistic color to the shadow)
· Opacity: 75%
· Distance: ~8 px
· Spread : 0 px
· Size: ~10 px (sometimes more if I want the quality of light to look more muted)

Then once I determine which layers I want more depth to, I right click the layer effects/create layer. That then puts the shadow on its own layer. Once it is on its own layer I click on that layer and kit CTRL-T to free transform then I right click/warp to actually warp the shadow to make it look as though the element above it is not laying flat on the page.

I then take the corners and slightly pull them opposite the light source. If it is coming from the upper left as it is in this lo, I pulled the upper right and lower right corner points away from the element. On this Layout the shadows are warped on the frame, the ribbon and the heart in the upper right corner.

As you can see once the shadows have been warped, the element looks as though it is “lifted off the page”. I then change the opacity of the lay until it looks right. Usually anywhere between 50-75%.

I find it very therapeutic and if I'm ever stuck, I just go wondering through the gallery. Sometimes it helps me decide on a kit and sometimes it helps me determine where my layout is going to go. I've been keeping an eye out on Misty's gallery at FPD and ran across this wonderful layout by AmieN1. I love the clustering she did around the photos. I also love how she did her title and the journaling!

I don't know about where you live, but in Texas we have exactly 4 seasons and they are....Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer, and Christmas. Right now it's actually 60 degrees outside- but it's kind of impossible to get excited about the holidays when it feels like I should be in flip flops and a super cute tankini. I'm just saying. :-P So I turn on my Christmas mix and bake pumpkin bread and drink peppermint mochas and pretend like it's about to snow. I'm sure you're wondering what my point is with this rant---I need some holiday inspiration.

I'm going to share my absolute favorite holiday recipe with you- and you share yours with me Scrapbook style! November 3rd Tip/Tutorial

I'm a day early too- but I have to work tomorrow & didn't want to forget to get this up for you guys!

I want to share with you my favorite place to print off my digital scrapbook pages and projects! Instead of spending a fortune on a wide format printer and more ink than you can imagine, you can have your pages printed for a great price with fantastic quality!

I do almost all my pages 12 x 12. I've printed all over the place and here's my opinions:
1. The big-box-warehouse-but-cheap-to-print store always cuts off borders and prints on flimsy photo paper = I hate them!!
2. Other online sites print great quality, but still on that paper that just feels too flimsy for me. I like the feel of a thicker, cardstock-like page and there is only ONE place I've found that not only uses that sorta paper, but has FANTASTIC quality and customer service!

Happy Tuesday everyone! It is chilly here, and wet…which is not my favorite kind of weather! I am more of a Spring/Summer kind of girl, and I can’t wait till it’s back!

Today I have a challenge for you, and if you play along you get a prize!

Usually we scrap about things that make us happy, right? Well today we are scrapping about something that makes us UNHAPPY. (hint: mine’s the cold and wet weather, LOL) It can be your least favorite weather, candy, time of day, household chore-whatever!

You do have a few requirements as well…can’t make it too easy for you! J

Funky Playground Designs is having a Creative Team Call
for the Sandbox Crew and the Playground Peeps

Both teams require a three month commitment (from Oct 1 to Dec 31)
and require you to be actively involved in our community on a weekly basis

Sandbox Crew

The Sandbox Crew's objective is to market FPD mainly via the creation and display of layouts on the FPD site and throughout the digital scrapbooking community at large. They are also responsible for maintaining the store blog under the supervision of our CT Leader. The Sandbox Crew's requirements are:

2 posts on the FPD blog per month
a minimum of 3 layouts per month with 100% FPD product, as follows:
- 1 layout with the store collab (pre-release)
- 1 layout for the new release blog post
- 1 layout for an offsite challenge

Playground Peeps

The Playground Peep's objective is to market FPD by engaging digital scrapbookers via inspirational activities on the FPD site, as well as promoting FPD offsite via social media, blogging and posting at the major digiscrapbooking forums. The Playground Peeps' requirements are:

Host 1 playground challenge per month
co-host one speed scrap/chat per three month period (total, NOT per month)
Advertise all store-wide sales and promotions via blog, twitter, facebook, etc. as well as in digiscrap related communities where allowed and appropriate. The goal is 1 promo per week in addition to any required promo for challenges you are hosting.
1 layout with the store collab (pre-release)

Additional Information/FAQs

“Being active” means that we expect you to be chatty in the FPD forums (public and private), comment in the gallery, make LOTW suggestions, participate in site activities etc. We won’t specifically be tracking these things, but we do notice them and team members who are involved will be more likely to be invited back to the team for an additional three month term.

“100% FPD product”means that you must use only current FPD products on your layouts. You are also welcome to use CU products or fonts that don’t require you to provide credit.
Any layouts that you create as a member of either the Sandbox Crew or Playground Peeps must be posted within ONE WEEK of product download to all of the following places:

The designer’s FPD gallery with a link to the product
Your choice of DSA, DST or MSA with a link to the product AND you must either post the layout in that site’s praise game or post the product in that site’s CTM enabling thread
1 additional gallery of your choice which allows linking to the product
1 of your personal accounts (blog, twitter, FB, flickr etc) with a link to product or to the layout (as long as the layout has linked credits)
The layout tracking thread in the FPD forum

Yes, you are absolutely welcome to make more than the required number of layouts provided you have completed your other layout requirements.
An "offsite challenge" means a challenge hosted on a site other than FPD that would allow you to participate in their challenge by creating a layout using 100% FPD product.

Site Blog Posts are typically one of the following topics and you are allowed to sign up for dates/topics that work for you from our schedule.

Layout of the Week & Gallery Standouts
New Products & Sample Layouts
Monthly Desktop Freebie
Store Collab Feature

We have a challenge sign up where you are allowed to choose the dates/themes that work for you. Hosting a challenge involves:

preparing & posting the challenge instructions and a sample layout
advertising your challenge offsite in appropriate forums and social media
leaving meaningful comments on the participants’ layouts & on your forum thread
distributing the prize to a random winner at the close of the challenge

Speed Scrap/Chat co-hosts are allowed to select the date and time for their chat so long as it does not conflict with other events on the site. Each co-host must attend the actual chat, but are otherwise allowed to divide up the actual work however they see fit. The CT leader will assist you in securing prize donations from our designers. Hosting a speed scrap typically involves:

preparing the instructions
advertising the chat before hand, on & offsite
hosting the actual chat (providing instructions & chatter to attendees)
leaving meaningful comments on the participants’ layouts
distributing prizes at the close of the challenge

Conan C. O'Brien, since we share a last name, it's only fitting that I be the one to John C. Mayer you. Folks, you may have heard of Conan C. O'Brien during last year's highjacking of the beloved Tonight Show. Conan C. O'Brien was screwed OVER. If I were Conan C. O'Brien, I would have ~~torched~~ re-decorated Jay Leno's new Tonight Show stage, but of course, one must be better than that, and instead blow the ratings out of the water for Conan C. O'Brien's new show, coming to TBS this fall, aptly titled, Conan.

You may be wondering, "Why the hell is she writing about Conan C. O'Brien on her DESIGN blog?!?" Well, beloved readers, Aunt Becky, the goddess of all uncensored and real life blogs, has proven there is some strength in numbers in the non celebrity world of the internet. After John C. Mayer (my celebrity husband and stuffs) deleted his Twitter account, no doubt to reinvent himself in the studio and come back next year to hand you your ass, Aunt Becky decided to blog about John C. Mayer by using his name repetively. She managed to outdo John C. Mayer's publicist and get her blog to the number 3 spot of Google search.

Conan C. O'Brien, I believe you deserve just as much attention. After attending a live Conan C. O'Brien show in Spokane (a truly religious experience), I am more convinced than ever that Conan C. O'Brien is THE late night leader. A redhead nonetheless! I wish I could tell people Conan C. O'Brien is my long lost fifth cousin whom I only see at weddings and funerals but with regret, I cannot. And since Conan C. O'Brien's staff has posted some internship opportunities (hello, I'd be an awesome Talent Intern!), I am dying to go back to school for underwater basket weaving or something, just to be able to apply (yes, you have to be enrolled in college and be able to receive college credit for your freaking fabulous Conan C. O'Brien internship).

You should really follow Coco aka Conan C. O'Brien on Twitter and Facebook. Be a fan, get the news, show some devotion to the hair.

Halloween is Coming!

So this is off the scrap topic but sort of useful for Moms and Dads.

I am the kind of mother who plans ahead. That's about where it ends though. I plan what needs to be done but the execution usually comes at the last minute. It's not because I procrastinate, it just happens that as a Mom, you always find something that derails your plans. There will always be something more important or urgent to attend to. Well not this Halloween!

The Costume Supercenter contacted me for an honest review of one of their costumes. Since Toy Story 3 has been ALL the rage with my kids lately, they sent me a costume of Woody, in my 3 year old, Ian's size.

When UPS knocked on the door, I couldn't wait to tear the packaging open. Who doesn't like to get new stuff? I was dying to try the costume on Ian so we very carefully opened and inspected the suit.

Ian received the Deluxe Toy Story 3 Woody costume.

Before I give you the goods on this costume, let me give you a bit of background on my costume buying experience. I am NOT the mom who would spend more than $20 on a Halloween costume. I may WANT to spend more the $20 but the frugality in me just won't let it happen. However, each year, the let down happens when halfway through trick or treating, the costume starts falling apart while my kid's still wearing it. Ian wanted to be a train conducter a couple years ago and I found myself digging around my purse for safety pins just to keep the darn thing on him!

So back to Woody. This costume retails for about fifty bucks but Costume Supercenter sells it for $39.99. As we carefully removed each item from the bag, I studied the construction. Let me say, I was impressed. The cowboy hat is made of a durable material and fits Ian's head well. The suit is a sturdy cloth that will not only add some warmth on Halloween night, it's also NOT that cheap flimsy material you might find on a $20 costume. The "boots" were just cuter than all get out. They slide on over Ian's shoes for a great fit. And we added the bandana around his neck, just like in the picture on the front of the costume packaging. All and all Ian was adorable. So adorable that even HE did not want to take it off.

I am so pleased with this costume, I'll be considering Costume Supercenter for Aidan's Halloween costume. They even do same day shipping for us last minute moms!

It is time for us to get to know another of Misty's Facebook Fans a little better. Today I want to introduce you to Courtney!!

I am Courtney, mommy to Aubrey 3 and Lily 20m, and married to my best friend Chris going on 5 yrs. I am from New Orleans, but moved to Dallas when I was young. I just started back to work recently and I'm really not loving being away from my girls. I have a little photography business called Francois Photographs, that I love, but I only work when things come my way. I love photography, digi scrapping, reading, italian food and seafood, music and being with my little family. Other than that there isn't much to tell :)

How long have you been digi scrapping? About 3 years

How did you discover Misty's designs? Through the scrapping survivor contest at Ginger Scraps last year

What is your favorite kit of Misty's? I've been drooling over Salt Water and Everyday Happenings lately.

How would you describe your scrapping style? Eclectic, I tend to change styles often and with my moods right now I'm into the paper scrapping look.

What's the one scrapbooking item you can't live without? Flowers :)

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Somewhere with a true fall season and that had some snow in the winter. I'd love a little history and character too.

What's your favorite movie? The Birdcage

What's your favorite book? HARRY POTTER!! I like the 4th and 7th the best

Soooooo..... I collab'd with a very talented designer, Scraps of Ellay. She brought a palette and a theme to the table and I jumped on board. I absolutely adore this kit and can't wait to use it for my own pics! There are 21 papers, over 40 elements, and a really cool alpha made by my design partner. (And check out those extracted hanging paper lamps I threw in!) It's called Asian Beauty and it's available right now in my store at FPD.

My CT did a fab job creating layouts too.

Perfect for all those dance recital photos, night out on the town or even some icy snow pictures! Here I used it on a hot summer day in Vancouver when my daughter and neice decided to dance to music that a group were playing outside. They got an audience after a while and loved it!
